How A Policeman Killed 17-Year-Old In Jos | READ FULL DETAILS
A yet to be identified policeman attached with the C Division, Operational area of the Plateau State Police Command, on Monday, accidentally killed a 17-year old teenager.
The stray bullet hit the teenager during a faceoff between commercial motorcycle operators (okada men) and police officers who were on patrol at the Ahmadu Bello Way in the Terminus Area of Jos the state capital.
The police officers who were enforcing the ban on motorcycles, confiscated some of the motorcycles found in the area, however, the operators resisted them which led to a commotion.
Following the death of the teenager during the commotion, aggrieved youths took to the streets in protest, demanding for the prosecution of the officer involved.
Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Bartholomew Onyeka, regretted the incident which he described as a paradox, maintaining that police officers are empowered by law to bear firearms to save the citizenry and not kill them.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner has ordered the arrest and detention of the five officers who made up the patrol team. They are being investigated at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Jos.
The Commissioner assures that due investigation would be carried out and justice served.
