The Lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives Hon. Sam Onuigbo has called on Nigerians to make the environment safe for the betterment of our children and those yet unborn.
Hon. Onuigbo who stated this following his recent election as the Vice President (Africa) of Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE) International, explained that the new role has positioned him as the head of GLOBE in Africa and Nigeria.
He stated that GLOBE as an International Association of National Parliamentarians plays roles such as sponsoring bills and supporting policies that are geared towards Sustainable Development, with eyes on issues that border on environment, climate change, agriculture, water resources, ecology, women, youths, social development and many more.
The lawmaker hinted that while most people have been hearing about the effects of Green House Gas emissions and lack of attention to our ecosystem on the environment, that many do not know the dire impacts of lack of attention on our environment.
He stated that through a collaborative effort with GLOBE Nigeria, he has been able to re-work and re-presented the Climate Change Bill which was passed by the 8th Assembly, but was not assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that the bill is so important to the tackling of the devastating effects of climate change and the preservation of our environment.
He expressed delight that the updated version of the bill has gone through the first reading at the House of Representatives, while promising to work with other GLOBE members and relevant committees to ensure that this is achieved.
Hon. Onuigbo further promised to work with GLOBE to ensure that necessary attention is paid towards addressing environmental issues through partnership with Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Legislative Committees etc to put in place policies that will help to limit Gas emission and protect the environment.
