Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has declared that the state has entered “a new pedestal” with the graduation of the pioneer class of the Abia Leadership Academy (ALA), a bold initiative designed to raise a new generation of visionary leaders from the state.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasized that the academy was carefully structured to redirect the mindset of Abia youths and instill in them the discipline, courage, empathy, and visionary thinking required to reposition society.
The first batch of participants, drawn from the 16–20 years age bracket, completed an intensive week-long training at the historic Government College Umuahia, popularly called “Eton of the East.” According to the Governor, the academy’s foundation rests on the belief that “excellence in leadership is not accidental, but a product of deliberate preparation and discipline.”
“We are sending you forth, not as you came, but as light-bearers to your peers, in your communities and wherever you go,” Otti charged the participants. “From this moment, you now belong to an elite corps of thinkers, visionaries and goal-getters who will determine the course of events in your communities.”
The Governor explained that the state government has invested heavily in the programme as part of its human capital development agenda, adding that the success of the graduates will justify the resources committed.
As part of post-graduation activities, the academy will deploy participants to secondary and tertiary institutions across Abia State to establish leadership hubs and share the lessons they have learned. Otti revealed that over 1,000 participants will pass through the academy before the first phase concludes in September 2025.
He further pledged continued support for education reforms in the state, including teacher recruitment, curriculum updates, and improved learning facilities, stressing that leadership training will remain central to his administration’s education policy.
The Governor expressed deep gratitude to the Planning Committee led by Professor Kenneth Kalu, FCA, as well as resource persons, facilitators, and the management of Government College Umuahia, for their commitment to the success of the programme.
Governor Otti concluded by reiterating that the Abia Leadership Academy is not just a project, but a movement to transform Abia youths into global leaders, anchored on values, resilience, and service to humanity.
