Speaking at the 19th-21st combined convocation ceremony of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, the governor unveiled a series of transformative initiatives aimed at positioning Abia’s educational institutions as centers of excellence and innovation.
Governor Otti revealed that the education sector has once again been prioritized in the 2025 state budget, with a 20% allocation matching the previous year. This decision underscores his administration’s resolve to address the long-standing challenges in the sector.
“Our investments in education are targeted at producing employment creators, not just job seekers. From retrofitting schools to training over 2,000 teachers, our efforts are designed to create a solid foundation for academic excellence and economic empowerment,” the governor stated.
As part of the event, the governor announced ₦1 million business grants for 150 exceptional graduates from the polytechnic. The grants aim to encourage entrepreneurship and support innovative business ideas among young Abians. Prospective beneficiaries are required to submit detailed business proposals to oggh@abiastate.gov.ng by December 31, 2024.

In honor of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a trailblazer in education and governance, Governor Otti renamed the polytechnic after him. He also commissioned several infrastructure projects, including:
– A newly reconstructed main entrance gate.
– Renovated administrative buildings and Rector’s Lodge.
– Foundation laying of a perimeter fence at the Osisioma Campus.

The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Christopher Okoro, shared remarkable milestones achieved within months of his appointment. These include the introduction of cutting-edge courses like Artificial Intelligence and efforts to accredit 16 new programs.

The combined convocation celebrated the achievements of 6,621 graduates, with 3,138 receiving National Diplomas and 3,483 earning Higher National Diplomas.
