In a decisive move to address the growing insecurity in the North West region, the Nigerian Federal Government has ordered the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and top military chiefs to relocate to Sokoto State. This directive aims to intensify efforts to eradicate banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism that have plagued the region for years.
The announcement was made by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, Henshaw Ogubike, who stated that this deployment is part of an intensified strategy to restore peace and security in the North West. The government has expressed deep concern over the activities of terrorists and bandits, underscoring its unwavering commitment to end the menace once and for all.
According to the statement, while in Sokoto, the defence chiefs will directly supervise operations and ensure that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang are flushed out of the region. “These criminal elements have been circulating videos of a Nigerian military armoured vehicle that was stuck in a waterlogged area in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara. Such acts are unacceptable, and the government is committed to restoring the dignity and operational efficiency of our forces,” the statement read.
The incident, which saw bandits celebrating around a stuck military vehicle, has prompted an immediate response from President Bola Tinubu, who has pledged full support to the Nigerian Armed Forces in their fight against these criminal elements.
The Federal Government reiterated its determination to deploy all necessary resources and assets to eradicate banditry and terrorism from the North West region, particularly in Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. The government has assured the citizens that the military will leave no stone unturned in its quest to restore peace and enable free movement within affected communities.
“We are moving decisively against the terrorists to bring an end to the fear and suffering of our people,” the statement concluded. The government has also called for support from the local population, urging them to cooperate with security forces and provide necessary information that could aid the fight against these criminal elements.
