Ex-Premier League star accuses Ronaldo of lying about Messi and World Cup claim
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s bullish claim about the World Cup has been disputed by a former Premier League player.
Former Premier League forward Clinton Morrison accused Cristiano Ronaldo of being dishonest with his comments about the World Cup, insisting that the 40-year-old would be unhappy should he fail to achieve the title, as his main rival Lionel Messi has.
The Al Nassr man had a recent interview with Piers Morgan, in which he discussed the World Cup. During the conversation, Ronaldo argued that his legacy cannot be determined by whether he wins the Mundial or not.
Referencing Messi, he explained that Argentina had won two World Cup titles besides the Inter Miami star, and as such, are natural contenders for the competition. He highlighted Portugal’s lack of success in that regard and how it would be a shock if they went on to win.
What Morrison said
During a recent media appearance, relayed by Goal, Morrison disagreed with Ronaldo’s claim, insisting that the Manchester United legend will be unhappy if he retires without a World Cup title.
“He will be fussed; Ronaldo will be fussed! Ronaldo wants to win everything,” he said. “That is why he is one of the GOATs with Messi, and why they are always battling each other and we have the debate about who is the best.
“Ronaldo wants to be the best, and Messi wants to be the best. They are two players that we will probably never see again in this era that have been fantastic.
“Everyone wants to win the World Cup. Every individual growing up, you want to win the World Cup – that’s what you dream of when watching it on the TV growing up. He will want to win the World Cup.
“Maybe it was a tongue-in-cheek answer. Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic player and it would probably complete everything that he has done in the game if he did go on to win the World Cup.
“It will be difficult for Portugal because there are a lot of top teams, but he has a great chance because they have a lot of top players. Obviously, Ronaldo wants to win that. Whether he wins it or doesn’t win it, he will still go down as one of the best players ever to play the game.”
