The Enyimba Economic City project which is billed to commence soon received a major setback recently.
Following reports of a scuffle between the youths of Ugwati village in Ukwa West and the survey team of the Enyimba Economic City (EEC) project which reportedly led to the death of the youth president, Nwakanma Ogbuji, and left others injured, reporters on ground received an exclusive report of what really went down.
According to a source who doesn’t want his name witheld, the team of Enyimba Economic City, led by one David went to the Ukwa West Local Government Area yesterday on an invite by the community leaders of Ugwati community to survey a land meant for the EEC project.
They were lured to the town hall of the community instead of the relevant land to be surveyed and later ambushed by some youths of the village who stormed the place with machetes, bottles, and other dangerous weapons. The youths argued that they would not let out their lands to the project.
Trouble started when the late Nwakanma allegedly attempted to disarm one of the policemen who came with the survey team. This led to a scuffle, and the policeman shot him in response, and he died instantly, another youth tried to attack the policeman and was shot too, but as of yesterday, he was still alive.
The EEC survey team was thoroughly beaten by the youths, and the team leader, David, managed to escape to the bush with the help of a member of the community while the other team members escaped to their vehicles when the policemen started firing into the air to disperse the rampaging youths.
According to our source, David called some government officials from the area, and a team of SARS officers was sent to his rescue. He is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Aba for the injuries he sustained in the attack.
The case has been reported to the State CID and is under investigation.
