Governor Alex Otti delivers a powerful message as Nigeria marks her 65th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to rise above past betrayals, embrace unity, and rebuild the nation together. Discover the full speech that inspired Nigerians.
As Nigeria marked her 65th Independence Anniversary, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has charged Nigerians to rise beyond past failures, reject divisive tendencies, and recommit to the noble ideals that inspired the country’s founding fathers.
Delivering his Independence Day address on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in Umuahia, Governor Otti described the anniversary as a moment of sober reflection and renewed hope, noting that while Nigeria had suffered setbacks and disappointments, the nation still holds the potential to lead Africa and inspire black people across the globe.
“We are a people of destiny and the evidence is in the miracle of our continued existence… The best of our years is in the future, not in the glory of the past nor the frustrations of the present,” Otti declared.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges — ranging from tribalism, corruption, insecurity, and mistrust — should not define its future, but rather serve as lessons for a new beginning. According to him, Independence is not just a celebration of the past, but an invitation for every Nigerian to take responsibility for rebuilding the nation.
Otti described Nigeria as an ambitious project tied to the destiny of the black race, stressing that a thriving Nigeria gives hope to black people worldwide, while continuous failures fuel negative stereotypes.
The Governor paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, gallant soldiers, police officers, and ordinary citizens who had sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom and in ongoing battles against insecurity and national crises.
He also praised Abians for their unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project, urging them to keep spreading their talents across the country and remain active in the push for national rebirth.
“Mistakes have been made, but the good thing is that yet another beautiful opportunity has been offered us — to start afresh, to rise to the noble ideals of the independence movement,” he said.
Governor Otti concluded with a message of patriotism and unity, urging Nigerians to forgo finger-pointing and embrace collective responsibility.
“Happy Independence, Nigeria,” he declared.
