The news of National Board of Technical Education, withdrawing the accreditation of Abia state polytechnic Aba, due to nonpayment of 30months salary arrears, didn’t come as a surprise to many of us who have painfully followed the gradual deterioration of our state.
Prior to this ugly development, I had on many occasions called the attention of the state government to the lingering salary issues and the consequences, but my advice not only fell on deaf ears, I was berated for good measure.
The government has to, as a matter urgency, clear Abia Polytechnic’s staff salary backlog. ABSU staff are also owed 10 months’ salary arrears. We shouldn’t wait until NUC deaccredits the institution. The state government should pay its workers as and when due.
