A major political realignment has taken place in Abia State as Ward 1 (Imenyi) in Isuikwuato Local Government Area witnesses what observers describe as a “total collapse” of opposition structures into the Labour Party.
The development followed the defection of a key political figure, Chief Prosper Arike Ejimofor, popularly known as Escalade, alongside his supporters, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party.
The high-profile defection, which took place on April 6, 2026, at Ahaba Ihuma Hall in Imenyi, is already generating reactions across political circles, with many describing it as a significant boost for the Labour Party’s growing dominance in Abia State.
Escalade, a former House of Assembly aspirant and a well-known entrepreneur in the hospitality sector, said his decision was driven by what he described as the “visible transformation” under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
According to him, the state’s economic revival has had a direct positive impact on businesses, including his own, which he revealed had previously struggled but is now thriving.
“There is no way any right-thinking person will not support what is happening in Abia today,” he said, adding that the Labour Party represents the direction the state must continue to follow.
He further pledged total commitment to the party’s success, assuring that he would deploy his resources, time, and influence to ensure Governor Otti’s re-election in 2027.
Political stakeholders present at the event described the defection as a turning point for Ward 1, noting that the opposition’s presence in the area has now become “almost non-existent.”
The gathering, attended by prominent Labour Party figures and grassroots leaders, signaled a consolidation of political strength in the ward, with calls for unity among members to sustain the momentum ahead of future elections.
Escalade later hosted the Isuikwuato LGA Labour Party Chairman, Hon. Harrison Onuke; the member representing Isuikwuato State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Lucky Udoka Nweke Johnson; alongside other prominent stakeholders at his residence.
Analysts believe the development reflects a broader trend across Abia State, where increasing numbers of political actors are aligning with the Labour Party, citing governance performance and grassroots appeal.
With the 2027 general elections gradually approaching, the collapse of opposition structures in key wards like Imenyi is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the state.
