Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been arrested in France, intensifying global concerns over the platform’s alleged role in criminal activities. The tech world awaits further developments in this high-profile case.

Pavel Durov, the billionaire founder and CEO of Telegram, was detained at Bourget Airport near Paris on Saturday, in a move that has sent shockwaves through the tech community and beyond. According to French news outlets TF1 and BFM TV, the arrest was made under a French warrant linked to an ongoing police investigation into Telegram’s alleged involvement in facilitating criminal activities.

Durov, a 39-year-old Franco-Russian national, was traveling from Azerbaijan on his private jet when he was apprehended by the Air Transport Gendarmerie. He was accompanied by a bodyguard and a woman at the time of his arrest.

Telegram, known for its strong privacy features and widespread use, has often been criticized for its potential misuse by criminal organizations. Durov’s arrest highlights growing concerns among global authorities about the platform’s role in enabling illegal activities.

As of the time of reporting, neither Telegram nor the French Interior Ministry and police have issued any statements regarding the arrest.

Durov’s detainment is expected to further complicate the ongoing debate over privacy, encryption, and the responsibility of tech companies in preventing criminal misuse of their platforms.
