Tension heightened in Bende Local Government Area on Tuesday after unknown persons vandalised the Bende Local Government Council Headquarters in what officials described as a desperate and uncivilised political attack against the administration of Mayor Hon. Dcn. Uwabunkonye Bassey.
The shocking incident occurred at the political block of the council secretariat, where the office of the Executive Chairman is located. Workers arriving early in the morning reportedly met a disturbing sight as human waste was deliberately plastered at multiple entrances of the complex, effectively desecrating a public institution meant to serve the people.
The act, captured in a video now circulating widely, has sparked outrage among council staff, residents, and political observers, with many describing it as a new low in the ongoing political rivalry within the local government.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Mayor, Chimezie Princewill Okezie, the development was described as a dangerous escalation of opposition politics from online propaganda to physical provocation.
According to the statement, the act was clearly intended to insult the office of the mayor, provoke chaos, and intimidate council workers, but it has instead exposed what the administration described as the desperation of elements who have failed to counter governance with ideas or performance.
“This shameful display goes beyond criticism and enters the realm of criminal provocation. It is an affront to the dignity of the council, its workers, and the people of Bende,” the statement read.
The Bende LGA leadership assured residents that the incident will not be swept under the carpet, stressing that investigations are already underway to identify those responsible, regardless of political affiliation.
Officials also confirmed that security agencies have been notified, as the act amounts to vandalism and desecration of government property.
Despite the incident, the administration reiterated that Mayor Uwabunkonye Bassey remains undistracted and committed to delivering purposeful governance to Ndi Bende.
The statement emphasised that history has shown that leadership validated by the people cannot be shaken by intimidation, adding that the administration would respond with governance, not retaliation.
As the story continues to unfold, residents are calling for calm while urging security agencies to act swiftly to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
