Governor Alex C. Otti, OFR, on Wednesday used the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day to draw powerful connections between Nigeria’s turbulent history, the sacrifices of its military, and Abia State’s steady journey toward peace, security and economic revival.
Speaking at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Arcade in Umuahia, the Governor described January 15 as one of the most symbolic dates in Nigeria’s history, a day that carries both the scars of national tragedy and the promise of rebirth.
Otti recalled that January 15, 1966 marked Nigeria’s first military coup, an event that plunged the country into decades of instability, distrust and institutional decay. Sixty years later, he noted, the wounds of that tragic night still echo across the nation’s political and social landscape.
Yet, the Governor said the same date also represents hope, because it was on January 15, 1970, that the Nigerian Civil War ended, bringing the country back from the brink of collapse and opening a new chapter of unity and rebuilding.
According to him, Nigeria’s survival despite these painful chapters reflects the triumph of collective faith over despair and cynicism.
Governor Otti described the Nigerian Armed Forces as the living symbol of the country’s unity and resilience, noting that beyond their historical role in shaping Nigeria, they have evolved into a professional institution dedicated to protecting democracy and territorial integrity.
He said the 2026 Remembrance Day was not just a ceremonial gathering, but a moment for the nation to honour men and women who gave their lives so that Nigeria could survive its contradictions and imperfections.
The Governor praised military personnel as people who place duty above personal safety, choosing service even in the face of death in pursuit of a higher cause — the survival of the nation.
According to him, the courage, discipline and ethical values of the armed forces remain a model for citizens in all walks of life, especially in a country still battling the legacies of mistrust and division.
Turning to Abia, Governor Otti said the state’s rapid transformation from fear and insecurity to peace and stability would not have been possible without the dedication of the armed forces and other security agencies.
He revealed that Abia has now emerged as one of the safest destinations to live, travel and do business in Nigeria — a development that has directly revived agriculture, commerce and social life across both urban and rural communities.
The Governor praised the leadership of the various security agencies in Abia for their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that their work has helped unlock previously abandoned farmlands and economic assets.
Otti assured security agencies of the continuous support of the Abia State Government as they work to sustain law, order and stability.
In a deeply emotional moment, Governor Otti paid tribute to security personnel who lost their lives in active service in Abia over the past year, including Lance Corporals Aminu Sani, Muazu Abdullahi, George Sylvanus and OSED Baba.
He announced that the Abia State Government has committed to the welfare of their families, providing financial support for spouses and full scholarships for their children up to tertiary education.
The Governor added that the same package has been extended to families of fallen police officers and other security operatives who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
As he concluded, Otti urged Nigerians to reject ethnic, religious and political extremism, warning that violence and intolerance only deepen national wounds.
He called for dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect as the foundation of lasting peace, reminding citizens that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength, not division.
According to him, what binds Nigerians together remains stronger than what divides them — if leaders and citizens choose unity over chaos.
