Ex-Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu has cleared the Senate Foreign Affairs screening as ambassador-designate. Read why this matters for Nigeria’s diplomacy.

Former Abia State Governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has successfully cleared the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs screening as an ambassadorial nominee.

The screening, chaired by Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, included over 60 nominees forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Other cleared figures include former ministers Femi Fani-Kayode and Abdulrahman Dambazau, media strategist Reno Omokri, ex-INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, and former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Ikpeazu served as Abia State governor from 2015 to 2023.

The nominees now await full Senate confirmation, which could take place during the next plenary session.
