In a shocking revelation that has thrown the global Catholic community into mourning, the personal doctor of Pope Francis, Professor Sergio Alfieri, has revealed haunting details about the final moments of the revered pontiff before his sudden death.
According to Alfieri, who heads the Pope’s medical team at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the 88-year-old pontiff died quietly and without suffering from an unexpected and fatal stroke in the early hours of Monday morning.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Alfieri confirmed he received an urgent call from the Vatican around 5:30 a.m. and arrived at Pope Francis’ chambers about 20 minutes later—only to meet the pope unconscious and already slipping into a coma.
“I entered his rooms, and he had his eyes open,” Alfieri recounted. “I ascertained that there were no respiratory problems. I called his name several times, but there was no response. At that moment, I knew there was nothing more to do.”
He further explained that though some Vatican officials suggested moving the pontiff back to the hospital, he advised against it, knowing the move would be fatal.
“He would have died on the way. Doing a scan might have confirmed the diagnosis, but it wouldn’t have changed anything. It was one of those strokes that, within an hour, carries you away.”
Pope Francis, who had previously battled double pneumonia earlier this year, appeared to have been recovering well. In fact, just a day before his death, he was seen waving to crowds from his open-air Popemobile in St. Peter’s Square during Easter Sunday celebrations.
The sudden death has left millions of Catholics stunned, as it came without warning or prior indication of relapse. Alfieri revealed that Francis’ health seemed stable in recent weeks, making his passing even more mysterious and painful for the faithful worldwide.
