Stroke and Pneumonia: What Really Caused Pope Francis’ Death

The Vatican has finally revealed the cause of Pope Francis’ death. Find out what led to his final moments and what the official medical report says. Read full story.

In a deeply emotional announcement that has sent shockwaves across the global Catholic community, the Vatican has officially confirmed that Pope Francis died of a stroke, following a long period of deteriorating health.

The revered Pontiff passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in his Vatican residence on Easter Monday, ending weeks of intense speculation and global concern about his condition.

According to a detailed statement released on Monday by Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, head of the Vatican’s Health Department, Pope Francis slipped into a coma following a cerebral stroke, which led to what he described as “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.”

But that was not all.

Dr. Arcangeli disclosed that the late Pope had been battling pneumonia in both lungs, leading to multiple episodes of respiratory failure in the days leading to his death.

“In addition to the stroke, His Holiness was suffering from double pneumonia, which significantly weakened his respiratory system. Despite intensive care and medical intervention, he experienced severe respiratory insufficiency that contributed to his passing,” the Vatican doctor stated.

Pope Francis’ health struggles date back to February 14, when he was rushed to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for treatment of bronchitis. He was admitted for 38 days, during which time the world watched with bated breath.

Throughout the over two-month battle, Pope Francis endured severe respiratory infections, and at times required high flows of supplemental oxygen as well as an emergency blood transfusion.

The combination of chronic bronchitis, double pneumonia, and finally the stroke overwhelmed his frail system, despite the efforts of a dedicated team of Vatican physicians and international consultants.

The passing of Pope Francis marks the end of a deeply transformative era in the Catholic Church. Known for his humility, progressive stance on global issues, and closeness to the poor, Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of compassion, reform, and fearless leadership.

Global leaders and religious figures have already begun sending in tributes, as millions across the world mourn the man who led the Church with both courage and grace.
