Court Awards ₦20 Million Damages to Kenneth Ahia, SAN in Defamation Suit — But He Heads to Appeal, Says It’s Not Enough

The legal battle between Kenneth Ahia, SAN, and Ikechukwu Iroha takes a dramatic turn as the defendant concedes crucial claims during cross-examination. With final written addresses set for May 8, the case inches closer to a conclusion. Read full details!

The defamation trial involving Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Kenneth Ahia and Ikechukwu Iroha Agwu saw fresh developments today as the defendant, under cross-examination, admitted to several key claims made by the claimant. Though no court ruling was given, Iroha’s statements marked a significant turn in the ongoing legal tussle.

The case, which has been in the spotlight for months, revolves around allegations of defamation leveled against Ahia, SAN by Iroha. During today’s proceedings, the defendant accepted some of the positions put forward by the claimant, further intensifying the legal battle.

What Ikechukwu Iroha Admitted in Court

Under questioning from the claimant’s counsel, Iroha made the following admissions:

He met his wife while both were government employees.

A revalidation of appointment document listing his name as “Ikechukwu Iroha” was presented as evidence in court. While he insisted the publication was later corrected to add Agwu, he did not present any proof of the supposed correction.

He created the video played as evidence in court, acknowledging its authenticity. Where he was singing “One one Bbbb, one one Billion Naira” mocking Ahia, SAN.

He posited that Kenneth Ahia, SAN, is his elder brother, adding a new twist.

Earlier in the proceedings, before today’s cross-examination, the claimant’s legal team had applied for an amendment of the defendant’s name on the suit from “Ikechukwu Iroha” to “Ikechukwu Iroha Agwu.” Though opposed by the defense, the application was granted by the court.

With today’s admissions, the legal battle inches closer to its final phase. The court has scheduled May 8, 2025, for the adoption of final written addresses, setting the stage for the last legal arguments in the case.

What Lies Ahead?

With the defendant conceding key claims, legal analysts are speculating on how this will impact the final judgment. Will these admissions strengthen Kenneth Ahia’s case? How will the defense counter these revelations? The courtroom showdown continues.
