Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai met with Rauf Aregbesola and Pastor Tunde Bakare in Lagos, fueling speculations about his political future ahead of the 2027 elections. Could this be a new alliance in the making?

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has once again stirred political discussions following his visit to former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and influential cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare, in Lagos. The high-profile meetings have fueled speculations about his next political steps as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai’s media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed the visit in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. “Malam Nasir @elrufai was in Lagos today to visit Ogbeni @raufaregbesola and Pastor Tunde Bakare,” Adekeye tweeted, without revealing further details about the purpose of the meetings.

A Meeting Beyond the Surface?

El-Rufai’s visit to Lagos comes just days after he paid a similar visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna, another move that sparked conversations about his political trajectory. The former governor, who has maintained a low profile since being dropped from President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial list, has been rumored to be working on a new political alliance.

Aregbesola, a two-term governor of Osun State, has recently severed ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following prolonged internal conflicts in Osun. His rift with President Tinubu has also been well-documented, raising questions about the future of his political career and alliances.

Pastor Tunde Bakare, on the other hand, is a known political figure, having contested in the APC presidential primary against Tinubu in 2022. His views on governance and reforms have often placed him at the center of national debates.

What’s Next for El-Rufai?

With rising political tensions and realignments ahead of 2027, El-Rufai’s meetings with key political figures signal potential maneuvering for a stronger position in the country’s evolving political landscape. While the former Kaduna governor has not publicly declared any political ambitions, his recent engagements suggest he is actively involved in behind-the-scenes consultations.

As Nigerians watch closely, the political intrigues surrounding these meetings could reshape the dynamics of opposition movements and power play within the APC and beyond.
