Abia PDP in Crisis! Suspended Lawmaker Officially Joins Labour Party—Is This the Beginning of the End?

PDP Lawmaker Hon. Dennis Rowland Ceaser has dumped his party for the Labour Party after being suspended for endorsing Governor Alex Otti’s second-term bid. His defection reshapes Abia politics—full details inside!

In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves across Abia State’s political landscape, Hon. Dennis Rowland Ceaser, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party (LP).

His defection, which was formally announced during plenary on Tuesday, February 26, 2025, comes barely a week after his suspension by his PDP ward leadership for publicly endorsing Governor Alex Otti for a second term.

This move marks yet another setback for the opposition PDP, as more politicians appear to be aligning themselves with the Labour Party’s growing influence in the state.

Hon. Dennis Ceaser’s defection did not come as a total surprise, given the recent friction between him and PDP party leaders. The lawmaker had stirred controversy when he boldly declared his support for Governor Alex Otti’s re-election bid, a move seen as a direct betrayal of the PDP’s interests.

In a swift reaction, his PDP ward leadership moved to suspend him, citing anti-party activities. However, rather than backing down, Ceaser chose to take matters into his own hands by officially joining the Labour Party—aligning himself fully with the governor he had publicly endorsed.

During the Abia State House of Assembly plenary session, Hon. Ceaser stood up and made his defection official, declaring his new political allegiance to the Labour Party. His announcement was met with mixed reactions from fellow lawmakers, as it further tilted the balance of power in the House.

With Ceaser now in Labour Party, Governor Alex Otti’s camp gains more influence in the State Assembly, while the PDP faces yet another credibility crisis.

Ceaser’s sudden departure from PDP is a significant blow to the party, as it reflects a deepening crisis within the opposition camp. Analysts believe that his defection could set off a chain reaction, with more PDP lawmakers potentially jumping ship to Labour Party ahead of the next election cycle.

The development also strengthens Governor Alex Otti’s political grip, further establishing the Labour Party as the dominant force in Abia politics.

Meanwhile, PDP faces a tough battle to prevent further internal collapse, as the party scrambles to retain its remaining members and regain lost ground before the 2027 elections.

With tensions rising and political forces realigning, one question remains—will more lawmakers follow Ceaser’s path and defect to the Labour Party?

Political observers are keenly watching to see if the PDP leadership will take further disciplinary action against Ceaser or focus on damage control to halt a potential mass exodus from the party.

One thing is clear—Hon. Dennis Ceaser’s defection is a major turning point in Abia politics, and it could shape the future of the state’s political direction.
