Canadian Woman Arrested for Smuggling 35kg of Synthetic Cannabis at Lagos Airport

The NDLEA arrested Canadian national Adrienne Munju at the Lagos airport for smuggling 35kg of synthetic cannabis, known as ‘Canadian Loud.’ She was promised $10,000 for delivering the drugs to Nigeria.

A 41-year-old Canadian national, Adrienne Munju, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for trafficking a large quantity of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as “Canadian Loud,” into Nigeria. The arrest occurred during the inward clearance of passengers on a KLM flight from Canada at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

Adrienne was intercepted by NDLEA operatives on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport. According to a statement from Femi Babafemi, Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, the suspect was found with 74 parcels of the illicit substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of her three bags during a joint examination of her luggage.

In her confession, Adrienne revealed she had been promised $10,000 by an online platform for successfully delivering the consignment in Lagos. The suspect, a first-time visitor to Nigeria, explained that financial pressure to fund her ongoing master’s degree in Canada drove her to accept the offer.

The NDLEA further disclosed significant seizures at various ports and locations across Nigeria, adding to its recent achievements in curbing drug trafficking. At the Port Harcourt Port in Rivers State, operatives seized over 13 million opioid pills, including Tramadol, and more than 338,000 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, with a street value exceeding N9 billion. The drugs were recovered from three containers arriving from India during a joint examination with Nigerian Customs and other stakeholders.

Additionally, the NDLEA intercepted 100 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 50kg at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos on October 3, 2024. The drugs were hidden in a container with imported vehicles and traced to a warehouse in Ikorodu. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, has been arrested in connection with this discovery.

In a related operation, NDLEA officers in Taraba State intercepted a commercial bus transporting large quantities of opioids, including Tramadol and codeine syrup, concealed in body compartments. Two suspects, Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor, were arrested during the search, while another suspect, Chibuzor Okafor, was apprehended with 80 blocks of cannabis hidden in bags of garri.

The anti-drug agency also destroyed over three hectares of cannabis farms in a boundary community between Edo and Ondo States, recovering nearly 10,000 kilograms of the psychoactive substance.

Reacting to these developments, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the dedication of the officers and men across the agency’s various commands, including those at MMIA, Tincan, Port Harcourt, and Edo. He commended their efforts in making these critical arrests and drug seizures, which reflect the agency’s commitment to combating the illicit drug trade in Nigeria.
