LGA Election Drama in Rivers: Police Defend Actions, Refute Fubara's Claims

Tensions rise in Rivers State as Governor Fubara accuses the IGP of political interference during local government elections. The Nigeria Police Force, however, defends its actions, citing a court order and the need for security.

The ongoing political tension in Rivers State escalated on October 3, 2024, following a confrontation between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) concerning the recent local government elections. In a sharp exchange, Governor Fubara accused the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police of undermining the election process, but the police have denied the accusations, citing adherence to a court order.

The crux of the matter lies in a Federal High Court ruling barring the police from participating directly in the local government elections in Rivers State. The NPF, in compliance with the ruling, refrained from providing direct support to the elections. However, on the evening of October 3, police officers from the Rivers State Government House were reportedly deployed to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC), which raised concerns. Following this, the IGP instructed the Commissioner of Police to replace the government house officers with personnel from the Operations Department to safeguard the RIEC office overnight.

Governor Fubara stormed the RIEC office that same night, accusing the NPF of meddling in the election. The Governor’s frustration culminated in harsh remarks directed at the IGP, including accusations of political interference. Fubara’s comments were described by the police as unwarranted and inflammatory, especially given the sensitive nature of the ongoing elections.

In a press release, the NPF clarified its position, reaffirming that the deployment of officers was solely to protect the RIEC office from possible attacks, in light of intelligence received regarding potential security breaches. The police further expressed disappointment over the Governor’s remarks, cautioning against inflammatory language that could incite violence.

The NPF has called for calm and emphasized that political tensions should not lead to a breakdown of law and order. The IGP has since ordered increased police deployment across Rivers State to maintain peace and ensure the protection of lives and property.
