How Omoyele Sowore Was Briefly Arrested and Released at Lagos Airport – Activist Speaks Out

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent Nigerian activist, was briefly arrested by DSS operatives at Lagos Airport. After a short detention, he was released, and his passport returned. The arrest follows his ongoing activism against government oppression.

Omoyele Sowore, a vocal activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos upon his return to Nigeria. The arrest comes amid heightened tensions around ongoing protests, including his involvement in the #EndBadGovernance movement.

Sowore, known for his leadership role in the #RevolutionNow protests and his critical stance against the Nigerian government, confirmed his release on social media. He revealed that after a brief detention, the Nigerian Immigration Service returned his passport.

“I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention, and my passport has been released back to me. #RevolutionNow.”

Omoyele Sowore’s arrest occurred in the context of his vocal activism against bad governance in Nigeria. He has consistently pushed for accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights. His involvement in the #EndBadGovernance movement, which calls for reforms in the Nigerian political system, further fueled his tension with state security agencies. The activist had raised alarms prior to his arrest, warning of a plot to frame him.

“Yeah! All around in my hometown, they’re tryin’ to track me down, yeah! They say they want to bring me in guilty. However, Babylon must fall! #FearlessInOctober.”

His unwavering defiance against government oppression has made him a significant figure in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for reform, particularly since the #EndSARS protests.

The brief arrest is seen as part of a larger effort to suppress dissenting voices ahead of increasing political agitation in Nigeria. Despite his release, Omoyele Sowore continues to advocate for change, maintaining his position as a fearless critic of the government.

The activist’s ability to galvanize youths, especially through movements like #EndBadGovernance and #RevolutionNow, underscores his impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.
