The Real Story Behind the Yacht in France with Nigerian Flag

The sighting of a yacht with a Nigerian flag in St. Tropez, France, has sparked debates and concerns among Nigerians facing economic challenges. The Presidency addresses the rising speculations and reveals the truth.

Amid mounting economic pressures and growing public frustration, a yacht spotted in St. Tropez, France, flying the Nigerian flag has sparked widespread speculation and intense debate. Many Nigerians, facing economic challenges, have taken to social media, questioning the presence of a “presidential yacht” at an exclusive French resort town. The concerns arise at a time when the country grapples with inflation, high fuel prices, and rising unemployment rates, causing public scrutiny over any perceived government excesses.

Reports circulating online suggested that the yacht spotted in France, reportedly linked to the Nigerian government, was being used for a private vacation in St. Tropez. However, the Presidency has swiftly moved to dispel these rumors, clarifying that the yacht is privately owned and has no connection to President Bola Tinubu or the Nigerian Navy.

Presidential spokesman on digital and new media, Otega Ogra, took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to debunk the reports, stating, “The yacht belongs to a private individual, not President Tinubu or the Nigerian Navy, as speculated on social media.”

Ogra explained that the France yacht in question, a 42-meter Bennetti vessel, has been privately owned for approximately five years since its construction. He further clarified that it is common for luxury yachts to display the flag of the owner’s country alongside the flag of the country where they are registered.

“There have been false claims circulating that a private individual’s yacht spotted in St. Tropez France is a Nigerian government yacht,” Ogra said. “The official Nigerian flag is green-white-green without a coat of arms in the middle. Flags representing the Nigerian President or the Armed Forces do not contain a coat of arms. Placing anything in the center of the flag is a clear deviation.”

As Nigeria faces serious economic challenges, many citizens remain skeptical and demand greater transparency and accountability from the government. The recent yacht controversy has only amplified concerns over perceived government spending and priorities.
