Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume : Senator Ndume Reveals How Nigeria’s System Rewards Corrupt Politicians
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume rejects the Senate Committee on Tourism chairmanship, highlighting his commitment to constituents and criticizing the new N70,000 minimum wage as inadequate amidst rising costs. He stands by his political beliefs and loyalty to the APC.

In a decisive move, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, former Senate Chief Whip, has turned down the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Tourism, asserting that he is “not a tourist.” Representing Borno South, He expressed his disinterest in the role due to his lack of expertise and focus on tourism.

Ndume’s rejection follows his removal from the position of Senate Chief Whip, a decision he attributes to his outspoken comments about President Buhari. Despite his removal, the senator stands by his remarks, emphasizing the importance of truth and patriotism in political discourse.

Speaking to journalists at his residence in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, he highlighted the need for realistic economic policies. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a N70,000 minimum wage but criticized it as insufficient given the current high cost of living. Ndume pointed out that the price of a 50kg bag of rice now exceeds N70,000, making the new minimum wage inadequate. He also emphasized the importance of reviewing the minimum wage every three years instead of every five years to keep up with economic changes.

Reflecting on his political career, Ali Ndume recalled a memorable bet during the Jonathan administration, where he predicted Jonathan’s electoral defeat. This anecdote underscored his belief in honest and fact-based political discourse.

Despite his removal as Chief Whip, he expressed no bitterness, attributing the outcome to divine will. He reiterated his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but left his political future in the hands of his constituents, stating he would follow their advice regarding his party affiliation.

Ndume also mentioned his previous support for President Buhari in 2015, which he quickly retracted after witnessing a lack of direction. He apologized profusely for his initial support and vowed never to defend ineffective government policies again.

Finally, Ndume called on his supporters and all Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful for the nation’s peace and prosperity, stressing the need for good leadership and effective governance.
