A tragic incident in Delta State saw 28-year-old Ufuoma Umurie allegedly murder his father, Rev. Isaac Umurie, an Anglican priest, in a brutal attack. The shocking event unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, sending ripples of grief and disbelief through the Okpare community.

In a tragic and shocking incident, the agrarian community of Okpare in Olomu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, was thrown into turmoil on Wednesday morning. Rev. Isaac Umurie, an Anglican priest associated with St. John’s Anglican Church, Okpare-Olomu, was allegedly murdered in his sleep by his 28-year-old son, Ufuoma Umurie.

The gruesome event occurred around 2 a.m., according to sources within the community. It was reported that Ufuoma used a cutlass to hack his father’s skull and mutilate other parts of his body while he was asleep. Neighbors and church members were alerted and eventually gained access to the apartment, but not before the tragic act was completed.

The suspect also reportedly attempted to attack his mother, who narrowly escaped harm while trying to save her husband. Ufuoma is now in police custody and is expected to be prosecuted for the crime.

Community members have indicated that Ufuoma has a history of mental instability and that this was not his first violent encounter with his father. An anonymous source stated, “This is the second time Ufuoma is attacking his father. The other time, he beat him up, and the Okpare-Olomu vigilantes held him. But the father pleaded that he should not be taken to the police station. We heard that he is not mentally stable.”

In the aftermath of the incident, the suspect was overpowered and handed over to the police at the Otu-Jeremi Divisional Headquarters.

Commenting on the situation, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and stated, “The suspect is already in police custody, and he will be prosecuted for the crime.”

This tragic event has cast a shadow over the community, especially as Rev. Isaac Umurie was nearing his retirement. The community mourns the loss of a respected priest and grapples with the devastating reality of a family torn apart by violence.
