Era Of Poor Attitude To Work, Promoting Mediocrity Over Meritocracy Is Over – Gov. Otti Says As He Launches Orientation Agency

The Executive governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, has charged Abians to do away with greed, selfishness, poor attitude to work, promoting mediocrity over meritocracy and excellence, as his government is bent on rebuilding the state and make it “radically different from the old”.

Governor Otti gave this charge on Tuesday, at the Abia Day Celebration Anniversary Lecture cum formal launching of the Abia State Orientation Agency (ABSOA) at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Umuahia.

While launching the Orientation Agency formally, Governor Otti noted that his government has hit the reset button and is building new structures of governance that responds quickly to the needs of Abians.

The governor stated that the Agency will guide the people’s orientation to add value to the society, warning that indiscriminate disposal of refuse, blockage of drainage, bribery, examination malpractices, lateness to work and all behaviours that sabotages the state civil service, wile no longer be tolerated.

‘The new Abia State Orientation Agency represents our boldest attempt at hitting the reset button as we separate ourselves from the choices that frustrated our best efforts and moving past the wilderness of mediocrity before now. A new era is now upon us and we must put away the gab of greed and selfishness, poor attitude to work, clannishness and instincts that promotes mediocrity over meritocracy and excellence.

“Not much will be achieved if we continue dumping refuse indiscriminately. Abia will remain what it was before now unless we resolve collectively that in public and in private, we shall only play by the highest standards of ethics and sound management”.

“In our lifetime, this land shall return to the path of genuine greatness and collectively, we shall overcome many obstacles before us and bequeath to those coming after us, a better society” the governor said.

Otti also charged the Orientation Agency to use all available tools to relay government policies and inculcate the needed behavioral patterns in all Abians both in the urban and rural areas.

“various policies have been rolled out to drive home our governance agenda; you are therefore mandated to make sure that the people, whether they live in the rural or urban areas are constantly made aware of various government initiatives to improve their lives.

“The state shall be relying on this agency to sensitize the people on various behavioral patterns that make nonsense of our determination to hit the reset button and return us to the path that guarantees peaceful co- existence” Otti added.

He also charged Abians and residents to ensure that they pay their taxes promptly and correctly to help the government get the desired results.

“Good roads, quality health care, standard schools , adequate facilities cannot be achieved if the people do not pay their taxes promptly and adequately” he stated.

In his address, the Director General of the Abia State Orientation Agency, Pastor Dike Nwankwo assured that the Agency will not disappoint the government but will discharge their duties of guiding Abians  and inculcating good ethical conducts.

He thanked the governor for demonstrating the will for a new Abia that will become a new destination of choice for investors.

High point of the event was a public lecture given by Dr Oby Ezekwesili, former minister for education.
