We Won’t Accept Old Naira Notes As Ransom – Terrorists To Kidnap Victims’ Families

Following the January 31, 2021 deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the deposition of some naira notes; N200, n500 and N1000 into commercial banks, kidnappers in Zamfara State has refused to accept as ransom the nai4ra notes which will soon be phased off in the country.

 

The terrorists who kidnapped four persons consisting of a man, woman and two children in Kolo village, in the Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, had demanded for ten million naira ransom. They however reduced it to five million, warning the affected families not to bring the old notes.

“As we were trying to gather the money demanded by the terrorists, they sent another message this morning that they would not collect old naira notes.

“They said they would keep the abducted persons in their camps until the release of the new naira notes in December,” Mohammed Ibrahim, an indigene said.

Recall that in October, 2022, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele announced President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval for some of the naira notes to be redesigned. Part of the motive behind the redesigning was to retrieve stacked money from hoarders and also fight terrorism.
