NUT Abia State Chapter Threatens To Withdrawn Services If There Demands Are Not Met

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), Abia State Chapter has threatened to withdraw their services soonest should Abia State Government fail to address their plights.

This was contained in a notice signed by its State Chairman, Comrade Kizito A Kalu and State Secretary, Comrade Mrs Nnenna Okoronkwo which the teachers vowed to discontinue if the government refuses to give heed to their legitimate demands after the expiration of the notice.

The teachers had earlier given a 14-day ultimatum to the state government which elapsed on 19th May, 2022 and extra 7-day ultimatum which will elapse on Friday 27th May 2022.

Consequently the Union wishes to inform parents/guardians of pupils/students and general public that due to protracted arrears of Teachers entitlements and poor conditions of service in the Public Basic and Senior Secondary Schools in  Abia State ranging from:

1) Fourteen (14) months arrears of Senior Secondary School Teachers salaries (9 months in 2019; 2 months in 2021 and 3 months in 2022).

2) Teachers Enhanced Allowance (TEA), popularly known as TSS.

3) Over the years, percentage payment to Basic School Teachers.

4) Non-implementation of promotions to Primary School Teachers (5) Consistent denial of gross salaries to Secondary School Teachers but rather basic salary has been the order of the day, among other entitlement too numerous to mention.

According to the Union, this announcement is to put on notice to parents/guardians and general public to hold their children on check due to security challenges in the country in case the ill-treatment being meted to teachers is not addressed by 27th May 2022.

The Union stated that their demands are neither ill nor politically motivated but it is borne from a bid to save the soul of education in the state for “the working condition of the Teachers is the learning condition of the child;” so that the primary and secondary schools owned by Abia State Government would be better positioned to train out qualified graduate if teachers condition of service is placed on government’s priority list.

Teachers are advised to await further updates and be mindful of channels of communications used by the Nigerian Union of Teachers at this moment of their trials for “injury to one is injury to all”

The notice reminds Teachers that their Friday Solemn Assembly still holds at various branch venues.
