ADISCO Graduates Over 40 Students, Charge Them On Their New Phase Of Life

  • Best graduating student receives award, cash prize from Old ADISCO Association

Adiaha Obong Girls Secondary Commercial School, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, on Saturday, October 9, 2021, graduated 46 students after the mandatory 6 years academic calendar.

Speaking to All Facts News Correspondent, the school principal, Mrs. Theresa Paulinus Essien Ibanga described the graduating students as committed even when most of them proved stubborn during their times as secondary school students.

Reacting to the education system in the country, she said; “There are children that go to school and are been derailed- maybe by peer group, by what they see in the world; the fashion, the high life and that derails them from education and there are some that go there with the mind to also succeed and then they succeed.

But for those that may not be able to move forward, thank God for the trade subjects- if a child learns something to do with his or her hands, should be able to live well in life without being a problem to the society.”

Mrs Essien noted that the major problem facing education is deficit in reading culture among students. “The problem we still have in the educational system is how to get the children to sit down and read.

There is what we used to call reading culture which has left the school system.

So all what we are trying to do is to bring back these children to read their books.” She frowned that students have jettisoned reading books and making researches from the library but resorted to copy already made contents from the internet.

Essien  added that, this sometimes poses as stress in a bid to put the children in their proper track. “Adiaha Obong is not only a secondary school; it’s a training ground for girl child. We introduce them to everything that a future mother, a future girl should have.

The place is secluded- here we don’t even allow single men to live on the compound. Morally we try to put them right, secondly Adiaha Obong is a Christian school and any child that comes here goes out loaded with Christian doctrines. We don’t force people to become a Catholic but we try to make them to Christians. We teach them how to sweep, we teach them how to cook, we teach them how to sew, we teach them an all round education. So a parent that sends a child here, has no regret”.

The PTA Chairman, Elder Joseph Okon Eton, expressed belief that the students can succeed in even in the midst of seeming unemployment as the school had empowered them with various entrepreneurial skills which is capable of making them self-employed.

The school Public Relations Officer, Pastor Isonguyo Ekpe, described Adiaha Obong secondary school as a place for the Girl child to be trained and get prepared for a better tomorrow. He lauded the graduating students who not only engaged in classroom exercise but also in external competitions where they brought back numerous awards.

The National Secretary, Adiaha Obong Secondary School Old Students Association and former Managing Director, Akwa Ibom Broadcast Corporation, Mrs Else Ukpe, advised the grandaunts to be ready to dare the new world which they will face and conquer it, and also make good choices that will impact their lives.

She charged them to also engage in self-employment if they cannot access tertiary institutions having gone through the basic primary and secondary levels of education.

On her own part, an excited best graduating student of the year 2021, Miss Maria Obot Edem noted that the school is equipped with good teachers and learning facilities. She expressed gratitude to the school management and urged parents to admit their children and wards into the school for quality education. Facilities in the school include; well-equipped laboratories- Computer, chemistry and physics laboratories food and nutrition laboratory, uninterrupted power supply, internet access, conducive classroom, security, etc. High light of the event include, cultural display by the students, drama by French student,  award presentations, among others.
