The Nigerian Senate has confirmed names of nominees for board members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

All Facts News understands that the nominees were approved on Tuesday, October 5 following a report by the Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes.

It could be recalled that in a letter dated September 17, 2021, read by President of the Senate, Dr Ahmed Lawan during a plenary, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Senate to confirm the Secretary and Board members of the EFCC.

Buhari explained that the request for the confirmation of the nominees was in accordance with the provision of section 2(1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.

During the plenary on  Tuesday (today), the report was again read by the Committee Chairman, Senator Suleiman Abdu Kwari, who also represented Kaduna North Senatorial District.

Lawmakers who made contributions commended the Committee for the discreet investigation of the nominees. On his part, Senator Jibrin Barau gave a thumps-up for the report, noting that there was no controversy trailing any of the nominees.

Before the open debate, the Chairman of the Committee submitted that the nominees made themselves available and were thoroughly scrutinized in line with the mandate of the Committee, while he urged Senators to approve the nominees.

He said: “That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes on the confirmation of the nominees.”

After contributions on the need for EFCC to have a board in place to strengthen activities of the agency, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege put the report to a voice and it was passed.

Below are the nominees confirmed by the Senate.

  • George Abang Ekungu – Secretary of the Commission,
  • Luqman Muhammed – Board member,,
  • Anumba Adaeze – Board member,
  • Alhaji Kola Raheem Adesina – Board member,
  • Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad – Board member.
