WORLD CUP: Ex Star Laments Nigerian Football Decline

As the Super Eagles and sports federation alike continue to confront the pangs of the Qatar World Cup heartbreak, ex-football star, John Fashanu has lamented the depth of decline in the Nigerian football.

Across the past three months, the star studded Super Eagles have been in the news for their shock exit from top flight competitions.

The edge out from the World Cup race by sports rivals, Ghana only aggravated the scars from the shock exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in the hands of African counterparts, Tunisia.

Similarly, at the club level, Nigerian clubs have been fraught with the inability to clinch either the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup title since Enyimba’s triumph in 2014.

In an interview with The Punch, the former England striker of Nigerian descent stated football in the federation is plagued with a streak of unsatisfactory results.

The sportsman cum television presenter added there was no need for lies or pretense as to how deplorable things have become.

“At a time when everything in the country is looking like it is declining, it would be very hard and difficult for me to tell a lie that Nigerian football is doing fantastically well in Africa.
Things are very bad at the moment and different situations are taking their toll on every sector and when players are happy it will translate on the pitch.
A lot of people are criticising the players for not giving their best, which is for sure, but at the moment, our football is in decline and that doesn’t mean to say things cannot change.”
