AFCON 2022: Why Super Eagles Lost To Tunisia- Augustine Eguavoen Explains

Former Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has revealed why the team lost to Tunisia in the quarter finals showdown of the ongoing 33rd African Cup of Nations.

The 56-year old who recently stepped down as the gaffe of the team blamed bad officiating for the team’s loss to Tunisia on Sunday, the 23rd of January in Cameroon.

He stated that the red card against Everton’s winger, Alex Iwobi who had barely entered the game was not fair, as the foul was unintentional.

The Carthage Eagles scaled through after defeating Nigeria’s national team by a lone goal attributed to the goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye’s error.

The Warri- born who spoke in a post match interview declared that the three-time AFCON winners tried, but they were deterred by the red card. While he stated blaming the referee was not his resolve, he reaffirmed his team lost the game to bad officiating.

“We tried to come back after the goal, and we chased the game. But then, we got a red card.
It was clear that the officiating wasn’t fair.

I won’t criticize the referee because they are masters of the game, but Alex Iwobi’s red card wasn’t fair. The foul wasn’t an intentional one.”

Carthage Eagles of Tunisia will now take on the Stallions of Burkina Faso in the quarter-final stage.
