In a thought-provoking statement that has ignited public debate across Nigeria, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has described the so-called internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys,” as “geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation.”
Speaking in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday, Obi argued that many young Nigerians who engage in online scams possess a high level of intelligence and creativity that could transform the nation — if properly harnessed and guided.
“Some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation,” Obi stated.
“Their creativity and courage, if properly guided, can drive innovation and national development.”
The former governor of Anambra State lamented the failure of leadership in creating the right environment for young minds to channel their intelligence into productive ventures. He noted that the same skills used in sophisticated cybercrimes could be deployed to create startups, tech solutions, and innovations that could rival global tech giants like Google, Meta, or Apple.
Obi emphasized that true wealth is not measured by money, but by character, integrity, and purpose. He urged Nigerian youths to focus on building value-driven legacies that uplift others, promote education, and reduce poverty.
“Real wealth uplifts both the individual and society, promotes education, reduces poverty, and creates opportunities for others to live dignified lives,” he said.
According to Obi, the energy, courage, and intellect of Nigeria’s youth population are assets that should not be wasted or criminalized. He called on the government, private sector, and educational institutions to develop targeted programs that redirect this raw talent toward innovation, ICT, and entrepreneurship.
His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians applauding the former governor’s perspective as a rare display of empathy and vision, while others insist that internet fraud remains a moral and economic threat that must be addressed decisively.
Observers say Obi’s remarks underscore his consistent advocacy for youth empowerment, skill development, and moral reorientation — pillars he believes are crucial for rebuilding Nigeria’s economy and reputation on the global stage.
