Why PDP Governors Nullified Suspensions and Ordered Return to Status Quo

Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have intervened in the party’s leadership crisis, nullifying recent suspensions and restoring the status quo. Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, explained that the move aims to bring peace and unity to the party’s leadership.

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have taken decisive action to address the leadership crisis threatening the party’s unity. In a significant move, they nullified the suspension and counter-suspension orders issued by rival factions of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and directed all warring parties to revert to the status quo.

The resolution was announced by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, following a two-day meeting in Abuja, where representatives of the NWC, the National Assembly Caucus, and the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) gathered to resolve the conflict.

The crisis had erupted when the Amb. Umar Damagum-led NWC suspended the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, citing allegations of abuse of office and insubordination. In retaliation, Ologunagba and Ajibade counter-suspended Damagum and National Secretary, Senator Samual Anyanwu, accusing them of anti-party activities and fueling political tensions between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The tensions escalated when Ologunagba’s group announced National Treasurer Yayari Mohammed as the new acting National Chairman, replacing Damagum.

Addressing the press, Governor Bala Mohammed explained that the decision to nullify the suspensions and restore order was a collective effort involving consultations with key party leaders and organs. He emphasized that the aim was to prevent further division within the party.

“I want to inform you on behalf of the PDP Governors Forum, the Senate Caucus, and the BoT that we have resolved the issues. There is no faction in the PDP. All suspensions have been nullified, and the status quo under acting Chairman Damagum remains,” said Governor Mohammed.

He further noted that no political party is free from internal disputes, and while some issues may require legal resolutions, the governors and other party leaders are committed to addressing these challenges without jeopardizing party unity.

In response to questions about the scheduled National Executive Council (NEC) meeting set for October 24, Mohammed confirmed that discussions regarding the sanctity of the meeting date will be held among the governors, BoT, and NWC.

Following the resolution, acting Chairman Umar Damagum expressed his support for the governors’ intervention, stating, “There is no crisis in the party as far as I am concerned, but some individuals are trying to exploit the situation. The governors are the leaders of this party, and we will abide by their decisions.”

Efforts to reach Yayari Mohammed and Debo Ologunagba for comments on the development were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

With this truce, the PDP aims to stabilize its leadership and focus on addressing broader party concerns ahead of future political challenges.
