Ondo, Nigeria – Chaos erupted in Ifon, the headquarters of Ose Local Government Area in Ondo State, as enraged youths stormed the local divisional police station, chased out officers on duty, and set the building on fire.
The violent protest, which began on Saturday, February 15, 2025, was triggered by the alleged death of a young man in police custody following a clash between two rival groups in the community. According to eyewitness accounts, the conflict initially started as a disagreement on Ogbomo Street, escalating into a full-blown fight before the police intervened.
Reports indicate that the crisis began on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, when two youth factions clashed over an undisclosed issue. The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of two individuals from one of the factions. However, tensions skyrocketed when news spread that one of the arrested youths had allegedly died due to police torture, while the other was critically injured and hospitalized.
As anger mounted, aggrieved youths mobilized in large numbers and marched to the Ifon Divisional Police Headquarters, demanding justice. When their demands were not met, they forcefully chased the officers out of the station and proceeded to torch the building, reducing it to ruins.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command disclosed that preliminary findings traced the unrest to a dispute between two families that spiraled into a street fight. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami, officers from the Ifon Division, led by an inspector, swiftly responded to the situation, making several arrests while others involved in the fight managed to escape.
Following the attack on the police station, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Afolabi, visited the scene on Sunday morning for an on-the-spot assessment. He condemned the destruction of government property, vowing that the culprits behind the attack would be identified and brought to justice.
In the wake of the unrest, local authorities and community leaders have appealed for calm, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands. Security operatives have been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation of violence, while an internal probe has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death in police custody.
