Why NCC Created PPP Unit In Its Special Duties Department – DANBATTA

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, has revealed why the Commission created a Public Private Partnership (PPP) unit under its Special Duties Department.

According to the EVC, the PPP was created in November 2020, to oversee collaboration with the private sector.

He said this on Tuesday, July 27, at the virtual Information Communication Technology and Telecommunication Conference and Exhibition (ICTEL) 2021.

NCC has a public Private Partnership Unit that oversees the NCC’s Revenue Assurance Solution and Device Management Systems project in collaboration with private sector.

“In a concrete experience of belief in the centrality of the PPP’s principles, the NCC in November, 2020 created a PPP unit under its special unit department. The unit is overseeing the implementation of the NCC revenue assurance development. …

“The two projects are being implemented in collaboration with private sector players while the Revenue Assurance Project is intended to address the revenue leakages accruable to the government through the NCC .”

Danbatta regretted that a number of challenges has continued to kick against the government and the Commission’s effort.

“However despite the various PPP interventions being undertaken by the government and similar initiatives in the Commission, a number of challenges persist in the telecom s ecosystem.

“These challenges include; multiple taxation and regulation, right over issues, vandalism of telecommunications, infrastructure, poor electricity supplies lately worsening insecurity.

He said these challenges conspire to reduce the quality of service and quality of experience by telecom service subscribers.

Danbatta assured that the commission is committed to engage pubic and private sectors in other to ensure that there is adequate transformation in governance and services.
