Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans for a government-Anglican Church collaboration to ensure the effective management of Ngwa High School, Aba. The Governor made this disclosure on March 8, 2025, when he hosted the Old Boys Association of the institution, mainly the 1982 and 1983 sets.

Governor Otti revealed that his administration had already commenced rehabilitating iconic buildings within the school premises, including Pollard House, the Engineering House, and the Administrative Block. He emphasized the need for proper management, asserting that the state government is prepared to either collaborate with the Anglican Church or take back full control of the school to prevent mismanagement.

“There are things I observed that I wasn’t pleased with, and I have reached out to the leadership of the Anglican Church. It’s either the government takes back the school or we collaborate. Fortunately, they are open to discussions, and I am expecting the Bishop soon for further deliberations,” Otti stated amid applause from the Old Boys.

The Governor called on the Old Boys to contribute towards the development of the institution, stating that their support is crucial in restoring the school’s lost glory.

Governor Otti Reaffirms Stance on Merit-Based Appointments

During the meeting, Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to merit-based appointments, dismissing the notion that his government operates on favoritism or political considerations. He emphasized that all appointments in his administration are based strictly on competence, qualifications, and ability to deliver results.

Citing the appointment of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Nwaigwe Cyril Chibuike, the Governor revealed that he was unaware of his educational background when appointing him.

“I did not know he attended Ngwa High School. Our appointments are strictly on merit. He wrote an exam, passed, and proceeded to the oral interview, which I personally conducted. If he didn’t pass, whether he was from Ngwa High School or not, he wouldn’t have made it. Everything we do is based on merit, and we do not discriminate. Once you have something valuable to offer, the state will find a place for you,” Otti declared.

Governor Otti Rejects Award Offer, Reaffirms Inaugural Speech Commitment

In line with his policy of rejecting awards while in office, Governor Otti declined an honorary award presented to him by the Class of 1983. He reminded them of his inaugural speech in May 2023, where he stated that he would not accept any awards, chieftaincy titles, or honorary degrees until the completion of his tenure.

The Old Boys Association expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for his time and commended his administration for the ongoing infrastructural developments across Abia State. They described him as a “superstar governor” and acknowledged his efforts in assembling a highly competent team to drive the state’s progress.

Old Boys Declare 2027 Re-election a Done Deal for Otti

The Old Boys assured Governor Otti of their unwavering support, stating that his re-election bid in 2027 is no longer up for discussion.

“The 2027 governorship election is no longer in your hands to decide whether to run or not. Your performance and achievements have already secured your re-election. No one will challenge you,” said Hon. Uche Nwogu, the immediate past Mayor of Aba South and a member of the Class of 1983.

Among the notable Ngwa High School Old Boys in attendance were Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (Class of 1985), and Chief Boniface Alozie Uche, Chairman of Abia Comets FC and former Games Prefect (Class of 1979).
