The EFCC has detained Senator Aminu Tambuwal over ₦189bn fraud allegations — but political watchers are asking if this arrest has more to do with politics than corruption. Full story inside.
Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to a staggering ₦189 billion.
According to reports by The Cable, Tambuwal is currently being grilled at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja in connection with the transactions, which allegedly took place during his tenure as governor. The anti-graft agency has not yet issued an official statement detailing the nature of the withdrawals or the specific timeline of the alleged offence.
However, the arrest is stirring a fresh political storm. This development comes just days after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the EFCC of conducting selective investigations targeting opposition figures.
In a strongly worded statement signed by ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party claimed that the EFCC has been summoning senior opposition politicians, many of whom are part of the recently formed opposition coalition.
According to ADC, some of the cases being reopened by the anti-corruption agency are not based on fresh evidence but are old files dug up from past years, raising suspicions of political vendetta.
Tambuwal, a known political strategist and influential figure in national politics, has in recent months been linked to high-level meetings with opposition leaders, including those within the ADC bloc. While there is no official confirmation that his arrest is connected to these political alignments, the timing has sparked debate on whether it is a coincidence or a deliberate move to intimidate perceived opponents of the current administration.
Political watchers argue that EFCC’s swift move against Tambuwal could be seen as part of a broader crackdown ahead of key political realignments, while others insist the agency must be allowed to carry out its work without interference.
As of press time, the EFCC has not commented on whether Tambuwal will be released on bail or formally charged in court.
The unfolding drama now raises a critical question — is Tambuwal’s EFCC arrest a genuine anti-corruption move or a politically motivated action linked to his alleged ties with the ADC? Nigerians will be watching closely in the coming days for answers.
