Nollywood actress and Actors Guild of Nigeria member, Ms. Doris Ogala, has formally demanded ₦1 billion in damages from Lagos-based cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Liberation City, over an alleged breach of promise to marry, a case that has triggered widespread public attention and legal debate.
The demand was contained in a letter dated December 16, 2025, issued by her legal representatives, Synergy Law Partners, and addressed to Pastor Okafor at his Ojodu Berger office. The letter gives the cleric 21 days to comply or face legal action.
Why Ogala Is Demanding ₦1bn
According to the lawyers, Ogala’s claim is anchored on what they described as a “clear, consistent and unequivocal” promise of marriage allegedly made by Pastor Okafor over the course of a relationship that reportedly began in 2017.
The legal team stated that the relationship started when the actress was allegedly undergoing emotional distress and sought pastoral guidance, a context they argue later evolved into a personal relationship accompanied by assurances of marriage.
Her lawyers insist that the alleged promise went beyond casual conversations, claiming it was reinforced through conduct, including introductions to the cleric’s family and attendance at family-related events, which they argue created a legitimate expectation of marriage.
Claims of Reliance and Personal Sacrifice
Central to Ogala’s ₦1bn demand is her claim that she relied on the promise to her detriment, taking what her lawyers described as irreversible life decisions based on assurances of marital commitment.
Among these claims is the allegation that she exited a troubled marriage and abandoned prospects of reconciliation because she believed the promised union offered stability and security.
The lawyers further alleged that Ogala suffered significant financial loss, claiming she transferred ₦45 million to Pastor Okafor in a single transaction and allegedly granted him access to aspects of her finances, actions they say were based on trust arising from the relationship.
Public Engagement Announcement Triggers Dispute
The dispute reportedly escalated when Pastor Okafor publicly announced his engagement to another woman. Ogala’s lawyers described the announcement as a clear repudiation of the alleged promise and argued that its public nature caused severe emotional and reputational damage, especially given her status as a public figure.
They further alleged that the fallout exposed Ogala to online harassment, public ridicule, and victim-shaming, which they linked to the manner in which the engagement was announced.
Allegations of Privacy Breach and Emotional Distress
The letter also accused Pastor Okafor of responsibility for the unauthorised circulation of private photographs, a claim that has heightened the controversy surrounding the matter. As of press time, Pastor Okafor has not publicly responded to these allegations.
While acknowledging that marriage cannot be compelled, Ogala’s lawyers argued that Nigerian law recognises remedies for breach of promise and aggravated harm, particularly where reputational injury and emotional distress are involved.
They therefore demanded ₦1 billion as general and aggravated damages, citing emotional trauma, financial loss, reputational harm, and the public dimension of the alleged breach.
Ultimatum Issued
The legal team warned that failure to meet the demand within 21 days would result in the matter being taken before a court of competent jurisdiction.
Efforts to reach Pastor Okafor or his legal representatives for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
