Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, reveals why deposed emirs, including Aminu Ado Bayero, are upset about losing their privileges.
The 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has shed light on why Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and other deposed emirs are upset. In a recent interview with Saturday Sun, Sanusi explained that their frustration stems from the loss of privileges they once enjoyed as emirs.
Sanusi and Bayero are both contesting the rightful claim to the throne of the Kano Emirate. Sanusi elaborated, “What we are dealing with is a situation where somebody divided us. When you create these divisions, some people get privileges. They didn’t ask for it, but they’ve enjoyed it for four years. Now, when they lose it, it’s a problem.”
He continued, “The problem is not what has happened today. It is what happened four years ago. If it had not been done, we would not be in this situation today. We are one family, we are one people. Somebody comes, divides us up. Even in this family, he takes one emirate, gives it to a part of the family. Now, when people enjoy it for four years and you take it away from them, it becomes a problem.”
Recently, a Federal High Court in Kano awarded N10 million in compensation to Bayero for his arrest and eviction from the palace. This ruling followed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s decision to dethrone Bayero last month and order him to hand over power within 48 hours.
