Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has dumped PDP for APC in a shocking political move. Find out why he made the switch and what it means for 2027.
…. ‘PDP Palm Wine Has Lost Its Taste’ — Oborevwori Says As He Makes Stunning Switch
Delta State was thrown into political shock on Wednesday as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has sparked widespread controversy and speculation across the nation.
The defection, confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, comes barely a year after Oborevwori clinched victory in the 2023 governorship elections on the platform of the PDP. According to Aniagwu, the decision was not only strategic but also unanimous among key PDP leaders in the state, who believe that the party has lost its “flavour” and is no longer in tune with the aspirations of Deltans.
“We came to an inevitable conclusion that moving out of the PDP is very, very necessary for us to be able to collaborate with our kith and kin and build the state that every Deltan will be proud of,” Aniagwu stated during a press briefing in Asaba.
In a statement that has now gone viral, Aniagwu likened the state of the PDP to sour palm wine, saying, “The state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose taste has changed, and there was a need for us to change the drinking pattern.”
Oborevwori’s defection has already begun to alter the political landscape of Delta State. Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, also confirmed the defection and revealed that a grand official reception into the APC is scheduled for Monday next week, where a “big political statement” will be made.
The governor was seen in a now-viral video being serenaded with the famous ‘on your mandate’ tune popularised by President Bola Tinubu, confirming the authenticity of the news and the realignment of political forces in Delta.
Analysts say the move could have serious implications ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially weakening the PDP’s stronghold in the South-South and giving the APC more leverage in the region.
The defection also raises questions about the future of the opposition in Delta State, the fate of PDP loyalists, and the broader implications for inter-party politics in Nigeria.
