The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has stirred controversy after declaring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must complete two terms in office, ruling Nigeria for eight years.
Speaking on Sunday at a stakeholders’ meeting on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Phase 1, held at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Umahi stated that President Tinubu would be re-elected in the 2027 general elections by the “power of God.”
The minister, who was Ebonyi State Governor for two terms, expressed confidence that Tinubu’s leadership has been exceptional, particularly in his handling of projects in the South-East, and that the region will give him near-total support in the next election.
Umahi, in his remarks, insisted that President Tinubu deserves another term, praising him for taking on infrastructure projects that had been neglected for over 45 years.
“A man that has the courage to do what was dreamt 45 years back is the only man that will have the courage to finish it,” he said.
He then urged Nigerians to ensure Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
“I say we must vote for him in 2027. The President must be re-elected by the power of God. Those in support say ‘hi’,” Umahi told the gathering.
Umahi went further to make a bold prediction, claiming that the Igbo people would overwhelmingly support Tinubu in 2027 due to his administration’s efforts in the South-East.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to have 99 per cent of the votes of the South-East because he has been very nice to the people of the South-East,” Umahi declared.
According to him, the region will prioritize Tinubu’s re-election over all other candidates, even suggesting that the South-East’s support would surpass that of the South-West in 2027.
“They will leave the South-West and give us 99.99% in 2027,” he added.
The Minister listed several ongoing federal projects in the South-East, stating that the administration has prioritized development across all regions.
Among the key projects mentioned were:
✔️ Enugu to Abakaliki Road
✔️ Afikpo-Abia-Okigwe Road
✔️ Other federal infrastructure projects cutting across the South-East
Umahi dismissed allegations that the federal government was neglecting any part of the country, insisting that the Tinubu-led administration was committed to national development.
Umahi’s bold statement has sparked debate among political analysts and opposition figures, as many question whether the South-East will truly give Tinubu such massive support in 2027.
While some APC supporters hailed his comments, others believe his prediction of 99% Igbo votes for Tinubu is unrealistic given the region’s political dynamics.
As 2027 approaches, the battle for the South-East’s political loyalty is expected to intensify, with various parties strategizing to win over voters.
