Ukwa-La-Ngwa Youth Reject Ikpeazu’s Endorsement as Leader, Demand Accountability | READ DETAILS

Ikpeazu’s endorsement as Ukwa-La-Ngwa leader has triggered sharp criticisms from progressive leaders. The group accuses him of failed leadership. Full details inside.

… “Leadership Is Earned, Not Claimed”—Progressive Forum Slams Former Governor’s Endorsement by Political Loyalists

A fresh political firestorm is brewing in Ukwa-La-Ngwa land following the controversial endorsement of former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, as the “undisputed leader” of the Ukwa-La-Ngwa people by a select group of political stakeholders.

The endorsement, which took place at Ikpeazu’s Umuobiakwa country home, has drawn sharp criticism and prompted a stern response from the Ukwa-La-Ngwa Progressive Leaders Forum, who described the move as an attempt to whitewash failure and rewrite history for personal political gain.

In a strongly-worded statement titled “Reclaiming Truth and Accountability in Ukwa-La-Ngwa Politics”, the forum questioned the basis for Ikpeazu’s anointment, warning that the future of the Ukwa-La-Ngwa bloc must not be sacrificed on the altar of political nostalgia and blind loyalty.

“Leadership—especially of a people as proud and dignified as the Ukwa-La-Ngwa—is earned, not demanded,” the statement read. “It must rest on competence, justice, and results, not empty rhetoric or recycled influence.”

A Legacy of Failure, Not Honour

The forum did not mince words in dissecting the legacy of the former governor, stating that his administration was “tested and found wanting.” They accused Ikpeazu of squandering the historic mandate he received as the first governor from the Ukwa-La-Ngwa extraction in over 40 years.

According to the forum, under Ikpeazu’s leadership:

Civil servants and pensioners went unpaid for years.

Key roads, particularly in Aba, remained death traps.

The state’s education and healthcare systems decayed.

Confidence in governance reached an all-time low—even within his own constituency.

2023 Elections: A Referendum, Not Betrayal

Reacting to claims that Ukwa-La-Ngwa people were “betrayed” in the 2023 elections, the forum said such assertions were deeply misleading. They insisted that Ikpeazu’s failed senatorial bid was not a betrayal but a clear rejection by his own people, particularly Abia South voters who know him best.

“The 2023 elections were not a collective setback. They were a democratic statement. The people rejected Ikpeazu’s return because they had suffered enough under his watch,” the group maintained.

Merit, Not Sentiment, Should Guide Appointments

On the current administration’s treatment of the Ukwa-La-Ngwa bloc, the forum cautioned against whipping up ethnic sentiments, stating that appointments and development must be based on merit and competence, not geography.

They argued that the real progress lies in inclusion through performance, not entitlement politics.

Remembering Jaja Wachukwu: A Model for Leadership

The statement also paid tribute to Jaja Wachukwu, the revered nationalist and statesman from Ukwa-La-Ngwa, calling on current political actors to emulate his legacy of vision, ethical leadership, and national service—not personal aggrandizement.

The Way Forward: End Personality Cults

The Progressive Forum called for an urgent reset in Ukwa-La-Ngwa politics, warning that continued loyalty to failed leadership models would only entrench poverty and backwardness.

“We must rise above personality cults and invest in grooming a new generation of leaders with vision, integrity, and cross-ethnic appeal,” the group urged.

With this explosive statement, the political atmosphere in Ukwa-La-Ngwa appears to be heating up again—only this time, the youth and progressive voices are demanding accountability, not titles.
