… Ukwa East Council Chairman launches major education support scheme, pledges continuity beyond his tenure as students, leaders, and dignitaries hail the initiative
In a bold step to strengthen human capital development and promote educational excellence, the Executive Chairman of Ukwa East Local Government Area, Hon. Chibunna Akara, has awarded ₦50,000 education support funds to 212 students from the local government.
The well-attended ceremony, held at the Ukwa East Council Headquarters, Akwete, was described as a landmark event that reinforces the commitment of both the state and local governments to improving access to education and empowering the next generation of leaders.
In his address, Hon. Akara expressed “great pleasure and a sense of purpose” in hosting the event, noting that the bursary programme aligns with the transformative vision of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, whose administration has prioritized education, transparency, and youth empowerment.
“When we educate a child, we build a family; when we empower a youth, we secure the future,” Hon. Akara stated. “This initiative is not just an act of charity – it is a deliberate investment in the intellectual capacity and leadership potential of our great Local Government and Abia State.”
The Ukwa East boss emphasized that the bursary scheme is part of a broader educational reform agenda, which includes:
Registration of over 150 students for both senior and junior WAEC examinations.
Support for 30 young males and females acquiring digital skills, with laptops, accommodation, feeding, and monthly stipends provided.
A youth development programme currently engaging 50 young people in skill acquisition and leadership training.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Hon. Akara urged them to take their studies seriously and become ambassadors of progress, integrity, and development.
He also extended profound gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his “relentless drive to rebuild Abia on the pillars of transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance,” pledging that Ukwa East will remain a loyal partner in the journey toward a new Abia.
“This is just the beginning. My administration will sustain and expand this bursary programme beyond my tenure,” Hon. Akara assured.
The event was graced by key dignitaries, including Prince Okey Kanu, the Honourable Commissioner for Information, who commended Hon. Akara for his visionary leadership, describing the initiative as “a credit to his administration and an example of good governance at the grassroots.”
Also present was the Labour Party State Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Otti, who praised the Ukwa East Chairman, fondly referring to him as “the Alex Otti of Ukwa East,” for his investment in education and empowerment.
The ceremony ended on a celebratory note, with calls for sustained academic excellence and collective efforts toward building a more prosperous Abia State under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti.
