Ten game ban! Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe sensationally told he deserves lengthy suspension for ‘brutal challenge’ against Alaves by ex-PGMOL chief
A former referee has called on Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe to receive a 10-game ban for his “brutal” challenge on Alaves’ Antonio Blanco.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Mbappe was given his marching orders in the 38th minute of Madrid’s 1-0 win at Alaves on Sunday. Now, former referee and ex-Professional Game Match Officials Limited chief Keith Hackett believes the Frenchman’s actions warrant a 10-game suspension.
WHAT THE EX-PGMOL CHIEF SAID
Hackett told Football Insider: “Mbappe’s challenge was brutal. It put at risk the safety of his opponent. The referee acted swiftly by showing the red card. Now the authorities must show that there is no place in the game for this type of challenge by issuing Mbappe a 10-game ban. Come on now, let’s stop this type of action by any player in the game.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Mbappe was fortunate that Madrid held on for the win to keep their La Liga title hopes alive. While a 10-game ban seems unlikely, the 26-year-old could receive a three-match suspension that will only apply to domestic competitions.
WHAT NEXT?
While Mbappe can play in Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final second leg tie at home to Arsenal on Wednesday, he could miss La Liga matches against Athletic Club and Getafe and possibly the Copa del Rey final versus Barcelona.
