The first electric car assembled in Nigeria, has surfaced at the National Trade Fair organized for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
The car exhibited by Sokoto state-born Aliyu Jelani, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, became the centre of attraction at the trade fair holding in Sokoto.
Aliyu is a United States-based Nigerian automotive designer, who designed the American General Motors’ leading auto brand, Chevrolet Volt. He was a senior creative designer at GM, until his appointment as the Director general of the Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council in 2017 by president Muhammadu Buhari.
Governor Aminu Tambuwal, while receiving the car at the government house, described the inception of the car as a cultural revolution that would generally affect the lifestyle and life chances of Nigerians.
“As global scientific achievements push towards zero use of fossil oil, the country is going to have many similar technological breakthroughs as the electric car that would revolutionize the way roads are built and managed alongside the evolution of many other material culture, thus generally affecting the people’s lives” Gov. Tambuwal said.
Jelani in his brief, assured that the car is environment-friendly, and also cheaper in terms of maintenance.
