The killings and kidnapping allegedly being perpetrated by armed herdsmen within the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, has resurrected after a little while of silence.

After months of peace, the people of Umunneochi were again thrown into panic as suspected killer herdsmen on Sunday, June 25, 2023 attacked some wedding guests and other travelers around the Leru area.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity to ALL FACTS NEWSPAPER (AFNEWS), the herders numbering over 30 including teenagers, attacked four vehicles, and kidnapped some passengers.

Military personnel were said to have arrived the scene where they engaged the criminals in a gun duel until they fled into the bushes. However, one person was shot by the suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The source narrated;

“The people are from Obuletiti. They went for a wedding on Sunday and were on their way back when they were attacked around Leru. Fulanis filled the bush, they were over 30.

They had accosted a vehicle and marched the occupants into the bush, another vehicle was coming but due to the driver was over speeding, he stepped on his brake automatically as he was suddenly stopped by the Fulani people; the vehicle somersaulted, some ran away while they held others who couldn’t run.

The ones coming back from the wedding saw the vehicle and stopped thinking it was an accident scene.

Bullets were raining like water, some of them ran away but this one was close to the person shooting and he got shot.

Speaking also to ALL FACTS NEWSPAPER, a cousin to the driver of the vehicle which somersaulted narrated;

“This is my cousin (the driver); they were attacked by kidnappers, numbering about 31 along Leru to Isuochi road. The hoodlums started shooting indiscriminately at all upcoming vehicles; he applied emergency brakes and somersault into a ravine ditch with three bullet wounds on his left arm.”
