A High Court in Yola, Adamawa State on Thursday convicted and jailed a Nigeria Army officer, Ali Mohammed, 32, for murdering his girlfriend, Patience Amos.

Adamawa State Chief Judge, Justice Nathan Musa, however, handed a light sentence of a five-year jail term, after he adjudged that Mohammed was a psychiatric patient when he committed the offence.

As gathered, Mohammed and his deceased lover who was newly recruited into the Nigerian Army, got into a fight over alleged infidelity when the former visited the latter’s rented apartment at Damilu, in the Yola North Local Government Area.

In his statement to the police, Mohammed, who’s believed to be married with children said he was provoked to have committed the crime.

He said, “I visited my girlfriend in her rented apartment on that fateful day, and soon after I arrived, she started abusing and accusing me of having affairs with other ladies.

“She slapped and pushed me away, yelling that I should go back to my harlots to continue having affairs with them.

“I got provoked, held her head and smashed it against the wall of the room, locked her inside and walked away.”

The 22-year-old female soldier was found dead three days later.

Delivering his judgement on the case, Justice Musa held that the prosecution proved the case of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt against the now dismissed soldier.

Mohammed was charged to court for the offence of culpable homicide, not punishable by death contrary to section 193(4) of the penal code law 2001 of Adamawa state.

Justice Musa sentenced the convict to 5 years imprisonment without the option of a fine and ordered that the sentence will start running from February 15, 2020, being the date he was remanded in prison custody.
