Skin Bleaching and it’s Effect on the Eye – Dr. Doris Essiet
A couple of weeks ago, I got a mail from Medical News Today and one of the topics in the mail was about a research that was done on about 500 skincare products pulled off online shelves and found out that over 250 of them contains a high amount of mercury.
Out of curiosity, I extended my research to know the effect of mercury on the eyes, and lo and behold I discovered that over-exposure to mercury can cause damage to the Optic nerve and can lead to blindness.
.
Now I know many doctors who are talking and sharing information on the effect of all these bleachings on the skin so I believe I need to talk about the eyes.
Overexposure to mercury can cause visual problems such as photophobia, blurred vision, tearing, and then create issues on the back of the eye, leading to vision loss.
Now the fact and my concern are that there is a sudden rise in people who claim to be skincare experts, who produce whitening, lightening, glowing skin care products and sell and most of them claim to use organic components.
Some promise “whitening” results in a matter of days. Some give glowing assurance etc. Some of these products, when you buy them, don’t have a list of ingredients on the body of the container. When you ask them, they will list things like turmeric, cucumber, papaya, honey, etc.
We have to be careful.
Yes, we can see the visible repercussion on the skin in a couple of months but we don’t get to see that of the eyes until it’s too late.
Stay away from bleaching, whitening, and lightening products especially when you can’t exactly be sure of the components.
Be wary of products that didn’t get proper research done.
Quit trying to change your skin because you may end up changing more than that instead change your health habits and your skin will glow naturally.
