Former President Goodluck Jonathan has strongly condemned the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and the entire State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu. Jonathan warned that such actions tarnish Nigeria’s global reputation and undermine democracy.
Jonathan, speaking on Saturday as the Chairman of the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja, expressed deep disappointment over the federal government’s interference in a democratically elected administration.
“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” Jonathan declared.
His statement comes just days after Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State—a move that has drawn widespread condemnation. Despite public outcry, both the House of Representatives and the Senate swiftly approved Tinubu’s decision, fueling concerns about authoritarian governance and political manipulation.
Jonathan Calls Out Judiciary Manipulation
Jonathan further criticized what he described as external interference in judicial processes, stressing that when individuals dictate judicial rulings, it erodes public trust in the system. He lamented that such actions deter investors and damage Nigeria’s economic outlook.
“The image of a country and how much investment it attracts is heavily dependent on the actions of the executive, legislature, and judiciary,” Jonathan stated.
He explained that, though former presidents usually avoid commenting on political issues to prevent tension, he was compelled to speak out due to persistent calls from concerned Nigerians, especially as a prominent figure from the Niger Delta region.
Rivers Political Crisis Deepens
The suspension of Fubara and other elected officials has escalated political tensions in Rivers State, with critics accusing Tinubu of power abuse and overreach. Many view this as an extension of the long-running political feud between Fubara and his estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, who is believed to have strong backing from the presidency.
As controversy rages, stakeholders fear that the crisis could set a dangerous precedent, threatening democracy and governance at the state level.
